The Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society (IMSS) of Prince George’s Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) Program is a school based settlement services that provides direct and immediate professional assistance to immigrant, refugee and eligible temporary resident students and their families after their arrival in Prince George and registration in the public schools.
ROLE OF A SWIS WORKER:
¨ Assist newcomer parents and students
with their settlement needs.
¨ Refers the families to more specialized
community resources as needed.
¨ Provides group information sessions for newcomer youth and parents, often in
partnership with school staff.
¨ Enhance cross cultural understanding
between school staff and families.
¨ Facilitate culturally sensitive
communication between school and
families on non academic issues.
¨ Refer students/families to school,
government and community services
relevant to their needs.
